Graph colourings and partitions

In this paper we have investigated mainly the three colouring parameters of a graph G, viz., the chromatic number, the achromatic number and the pseudoachromatic number. The importance of their study in connection with the computational complexity, partitions, algebra, projective plane geometry and analysis were brie.y surveyed. Some new results were found along these directions. We have rede0n...

Partitions and Edge Colourings of Multigraphs

Erdős and Lovász conjectured in 1968 that for every graph G with χ(G) > ω(G) and any two integers s, t ≥ 2 with s+ t = χ(G)+1, there is a partition (S, T ) of the vertex set V (G) such that χ(G[S]) ≥ s and χ(G[T ]) ≥ t. Except for a few cases, this conjecture is still unsolved. In this note we prove the conjecture for line graphs of multigraphs.

On path partitions and colourings in digraphs

We provide a new proof of a theorem of Saks which is an extension of Greene’s Theorem to acyclic digraphs, by reducing it to a similar, known extension of Greene and Kleitman’s Theorem. This suggests that the Greene-Kleitman Theorem is stronger than Greene’s Theorem on posets. We leave it as an open question whether the same holds for all digraphs, that is, does Berge’s conjecture concerning pa...

Colourings, homomorphisms, and partitions of transitive digraphs

We investigate the complexity of generalizations of colourings (acyclic colourings, (k, `)colourings, homomorphisms, and matrix partitions), for the class of transitive digraphs. Even though transitive digraphs are nicely structured, many problems are intractable, and their complexity turns out to be difficult to classify. We present some motivational results and several open problems.

Generalized Colourings (Matrix Partitions) of Cographs

Ordinary colourings of cographs are well understood; we focus on more general colourings, known as matrix partitions. We show that all matrix partition problems for cographs admit polynomial time algorithms and forbidden induced subgraph characterizations, even for the list version of the problems. Cographs are the largest natural class of graphs that have been shown to have this property. We b...
